About the Artist

Kristy Darnell Battani is an abstract, mixed media artist whose work focuses on Change—specifically the disintegration of materials that depict the passage of time. Kristy is known for her use of discarded textual information—mundane things that once gave order and direction to our lives but which are now outdated and obsolete, such as ledgers, manuals, diaries, textbooks and magazines. Incorporating a variety of media (acrylic, oil, ink, charcoal) in addition to the discarded papers, Kristy's work often takes on textile sensibilities. Taking design cues from textile art and traditional stitching techniques, Kristy creates her pieces from many layers of print materials and paint, worn back through sanding to represent the passage of time, a process that is repeated again and again, intentionally highlighting the abstract patterns, texture and color that emerge from the process. Kristy received a B.S. in Communications with supporting studies in Studio Art at the University of Tennessee, followed by a J.D. from Vanderbilt University. Following a career in law, Kristy pursued graduate studies in graphic design at Portfolio Center in Atlanta, later becoming part of the faculty. Kristy's work has been included in numerous corporate, university and private collections across the country.
