Working with clay in 2020 makes me feel like a modern caveman. As other cavemen before me, I'm interested in patterns. I have questions about them and my studio practice explores some of those questions. What are the causes around them? Why do some patterns terminate while others continue repeating? How are patterns in nature also made visible through the lens of anthropology, economics and politics? My sculptural work is concerned with natural forms and patterns, where I can explore the liminal space that keeps their part-to-whole relationships in balance. I find myself drawn to the rugged utility of natural patterns in the TX Hill Country, where her laws of conservation are on full display and her perfect resource creates a waste-free environment. Inspired by this design behavior, my organic approach to construction often echoes a similar tension found in nature.
