About the Artist

As a visual artist, Ruth Heffron is interested in relationships of all kinds:  how individuals relate to their communities and to the natural world; how people relate to each other; how the urban community and its rural environs work harmoniously, or not. Throughout her career she focussed on community. Perhaps this grows out of the years she spent as an army brat traveling and adjusting to new communities from Washington to Germany.

For 20 years Ruth worked in community foundations in South Carolina and the State of Maine. From 1999 to 2005 Ruth and her husband, John Vernelson owned and operated Compass Rose Bookstore and Cafe on the Coast of Maine. She currently works as an artist, as a nonprofit consultant, and she serves on the Grants Committee of the Austin Community Foundation's Women's Fund.

Since the 1990s Ruth has studied with a number of plein air artists including Kevin Macpherson and Jill Carver. She is a member of the American Impressionist Society, Oil Painters of America Artists of Rico Colorado and Big Medium in Austin, Texas.

Ruth's work is featured in collections in South Carolina, Maine, Montana, Texas, Colorado, Arizona and Washington State.
