Keeping Mum
2019, Acrylic on canvas, 16 x 12 in.
Native Texan born in the early 50's. I was raised in northeast Texas. Attended Kilgore Jr. College in early 70's and attended UT at Austin in the mid-70's. I was an English major who drew then. I took part in a student show in the Union Building and helped illustrate several issues of Analecta, the Humanities publication at the time. It contained art, poetry, fiction and non-fiction. I also published poems in quite a few publications at the time, including Analecta, The Daily Texan and Lucille, a poetry magazine edited by Stephen Harrigan, among others.
I began drawing at an early age when public schools had little in the way of art education. I began painting in early 1980 and soon after joined Austin Contemporary Visual Arts Association. After marriage in the late 80's, I left that organization only to rejoin it in 2012. Its current name is Austin Visual Arts Association. It seems 'contemporary' was only temporary. I have been in approximately 8 shows a year since then, mostly via AVAA.
