Mario Villanueva is a queer Mexican immigrant living in Austin, Texas. Mario practices with various mediums and platforms. From photography, painting, writing and illustration, Mario considers himself a multidisciplinary artist. Aside from receiving his BFA in Studio Art-Painting from Texas State University, he also minored in Mass Communication, which he considers a pivotal moment in his early career. Combining his love for art and analytical sense of analyzing, Mario has allowed his art form to transcend through different environments in which one can see or defines art. Mario himself transcends easily through different societal environments as well. As a queer latino, Mario has experienced both love and hate from the same community that watched him grow. As a Mexican immigrant, Mario has experienced machismo and a sense of belonging but not belonging at the same time. Mario has been able to express his truth through photography and social media. Truths Mario amplifies through his online platforms are queerness and the way it intersects with life as a latino living in Austin, Texas.
