2018, Watercolor and graphite on paper, 11 x 5 in.
Deann was born in Louisiana in a military family. Her mother is an Indigenous / Mexican American woman, and her father was of Irish/Italian ancestry. Deann had the privilege of living all over the world, but moving as a young person wasn't always easy. She would use moving boxes as canvases- where she would draw her internal world to quell feelings of anxiety and loss. This love of art brought Deann to the University of Texas, where she graduated with a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts in 1991. In 1996, she moved to San Francisco, California receiving a Masters Degree in Art Therapy.
In 2012, Deann was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer, and after a year of treatment, she was placed in remission. It was after this that Deann packed up her husband, son, and daughter and moved back to Texas. Since coming back, Deann is a regular participant of the East Austin Studio Tour and has participated in several shows hosted by the South Texas Art Therapy Association.
Deann is a prolific artist, participating in daily art challenges as a means of maintaining health. Deann has a private practice where she assists others in using the healing power of art.
