Favorite materials: pastels because they are fun to smear and be messy with, blend. Collages: it’s fun to experiment with color and shape, looking for combinations to surprise and delight, unlikely combinations or soothing ones. Oil and acrylic, well, they are the basics!
I’m inspired by light and color, line, shape and form, negative space; a moment captured in time, light playing on an object. Hill Country landscapes, layers of hills in the sunset. The roundness of an apple, the redness of a pomegranate, the curve of a pear. I like vibrant color; I like subtle color. I usually work outdoors, in nature or from a photo I’ve taken.
I want to draw attention to the beauty and magnificence of the natural world, for people to stop and notice, to value, appreciate and be grateful for what we have, to cause some thoughtfulness about living lightly on the planet.
In the "Before Dawn" series, I work in a more childlike style than my usual. On my early morning walks, I was seeing shapes abstracted and simplified by the darkness, and thought to do a series in a childlike manner: simple shapes, flat color, little detail. Tempera seemed to be the ideal medium for that series.
I’m also a gardener and Master Naturalist; am and have been a member/supporter of the Wildflower Center, the Native Plant Society of Texas and Useful Wildplants of Texas.
