Highly structured abstract paintings show a controlled but emotional world devoid of human life. Chasms open as portals into another world, one that moves beyond human impact. Other-worldly in their use of colors, patterning, and carefully constructed compositions, my oil paintings create an environment unto themselves; one of beauty and isolation. Inspired by the stark contrast of the natural and constructed world and sublime experiences in both, the work explores humanity's actions and Earth's possibilities. My work investigates the harsh impact people make on the landscape as they hasten climate change. I paint the surreal reality of desertification in Texas. I find a beauty and a refuge in the grand scale of geologic time and the endless change and evolution that will continue long after we are gone.
I strive for tension in my work. Both conceptually between life and desolation or beauty and fear and visually between abstraction and realism, altered and local color, and depth and flatness. I use repeating visual symbols drawn from strong forces of water such as rivers and their canyons, geysers, waves, and storm-clouds. The use of altered colors, geometric forms, and patterning push back on the work's realism. I hope that the balance created from opposing forces in my work speaks to the careful balance of life and progress I am seeking to affirm. I seek to create an emotional experience for viewers of my work and cultivate a fascination with the changes happening in our environment. Within my work, I am creating appealing pathways for people to look, experience, and engage with uncomfortable realities.
