We are a series of moments cataloged by time, understood by us through nature; the turning of the moon, the cycle of the sun. In my current series, I am celebrating the transition from one moment to the next by documenting the lunar phase in its cycle, or the time of day through its length of shadow. I look to the sky and ground to tell me my place in the day, I rely on those cues for assurance and familiarity of forward motion. The physical act of creating this series has become my method for balance and stillness amidst the chaos and slippery hours in the early years of motherhood.
The immediate and saturating qualities that both charcoal and gouache offer allows me to work quickly and instinctively, as if trying to match the speed at which that moment I aim to capture is spinning. The moon reveals herself with full clarity near the last minutes of drawing, as does the time of day in each collage with the sun or moon and shadows being the last elements placed on the landscape. The anticipation toward completion of each piece becomes a mini simulation of an earthly sunrise or sunset reveal, waiting and watching the unfolding until the apex has arrived and I realize again the transition was seamless and encompassing. To transition is to become—over and over again.
