Deepwater Horizon (Blood of the Bayou)
2014, Acrylic and ink on paper, 15 x 20 in.
Laura Klopfenstein is a self-taught mixed media artist working in painting and collage, and also using photography to document and sketch. She is a mother and works full time supporting engineering researchers who are addressing global challenges in the food-energy-water nexus. Her artwork explores environmental stewardship, storytelling, feminine rage, interconnectedness with nature, poking fun at absurdity and a sense of wonder. Sometimes works are more personal, sometimes more commentary on broader sociopolitical subjects. She enjoys creating texture and images that are intuitive and uses a variety of media on paper and canvas: acrylics, magazines, Austin tap water, blue ink and secret tools.
