About the Artist

W. Patrick O'Brien was born and raised in Houston, Texas. After his parents gifted him with a Kodak Hawkeye camera on his 10th birthday, he developed an interest in viewing the world through a camera viewfinder. However, it was his fascination with the graphics of 1950s Sci-Fi paperback covers and 1960s psychedelia that increased his interest in the visual media.

After receiving his BA degree in Radio/TV/Film from the University of Houston, Patrick worked as a darkroom technician and assistant photographer for commercial photographers and photo labs in Texas and California. Eventually he gained employment at a law enforcement agency, where he was responsible for forensic audio/video investigations, non-forensic A/V productions, and digital darkroom duties. He retired after 24 years of service and returned to Texas. Since then, Patrick has challenged himself to create surreal and abstract images that, to paraphrase Rene Magritte, "restore the familiar to the strange". Patrick credits Magritte, Man Ray, Jerry Uelsmann, and Aaron Siskind as major influences. He is a member of Texas Photographic Society (TPS), the Williamson County Art Guild, and the Corpus Christi Art Center. His images have been shown at a multitude of juried exhibits throughout Texas and California.
