Timothy McCool is an artist interested in abstract painting, architecture, and comics. McCool recently moved to Austin from Boston, where he was on the faculty at Boston College teaching painting and drawing.
Timothy McCool creates a range of paintings combining the representational and the abstract. The architectural spaces of McCool's paintings are rendered in a type of isometric perspective which removes them from reality in a way that references more formalist abstract work. Layered within those representational spaces, are further explorations that reach back into the history of abstract painting. McCool's newest works explore fully non-objective painting. These pieces no longer attempt to represent real places, but do incorporate simplified colors and shapes that are drawn from observation. By creating works that imply perspective and dimension, the goal is to give the viewer the opportunity to see something new and surprising; these works open up glimpses into other worlds while still hinting at our own.
