Cathryn Rowe is an Austin-based interaction designer and data artist. She received her MFA in 2011 from the University of Texas at Austin. Her work has been exhibited at Art.Science.Gallery and the University of Texas.
My work starts with an interest in something that feels too complex to understand in its current state. I create a visual language to simplify and focus the subject—manually translating it into something comprehensible. The backbone of all of my pieces is the dataset. By finding and shaping the data—determining what to collect, discard, and combine—I gain a deeper understanding of the subject. That discovery process plays a critical role in the language I ultimately create and the resulting visual form.
